The origin of the country , located in the hills for strategic issues , dates back to the thirteenth century .

The town was founded by the inhabitants of the «Casato Cusentinorum» at that time under the command of De Laurentiis , to take refuge from attacks by Felice Barbarossa .

The village was originally founded by people from Cosenza . News of the village is already in 1252 , about a dispute arose between the Curia of Salerno and Cosenza , respectively represented by Attorney Troisio of Laurino and Nicola Cito.

Examined the acts , the executioner Rinaldo di Guasto decided for the distinction of the villages of Cosentino and Sicignano , stating that the first belonged to the Church of Salerno and that it was exempt, for thst reason, from the servitude that Sicignano had to pay to his lords.
